Day Two on Location at Great HealthWorks

August 28th, 2010

OK, so after my rant here on the blog Thursday night, the Makeup Gods felt so badly for me that they whispered into the producer and client’s ears and set them straight on what makes a great day on set for a  makeup artist.  The first improvement of the day… the talent roster went  down to nine, which is a much more manageable number of people to spoil and pamper than the eighteen I had on the first day!

Second improvement… the talent roster contained some actual celebrities. Passing through my makeup chair where none other than three beloved Miami Dolphins football players, two from their world famous 1972 Perfect Season.  And last but not least, the very impressive Ken Meares, CEO and Founder of Great HealthWorks, the company we shot this commercial for.

The third and final improvement…  my call time was an hour later than the previous day. More sleep, less cranky, less rants here for you read. Works for me!

In all seriousness, I have to say that the staff at Great Healthworks are incredibly friendly, kind and generous. They are delightful folks to chat with, and they serve up a delicious cup of coffee. Besides, they were not the ones responsible for the chaotic schedule on day one!

I’m off this weekend (it’s still way too hot for any sane person to have a special occasion requiring formal dress and makeup), but I am shooting Wednesday and Thursday for  The Festival Flea Market again. Until then… have a great weekend!

I Love Being A Makeup Artist, Really I Do

August 26th, 2010

Not every job as a professional makeup artist can be glamorous, exciting and creative, but one can always hope. Today’s job, which I was totally thrilled and thankful to have mind you, was none of the aforementioned adjectives. The location… an actual call center. Think lots and lots of people sitting in cubicles with headsets on, thanking the callers very politely for having called. The shot list… the first half of the day was mostly wide shots of the facility, so no makeup needed. Lunch break… delicious turkey sub (OK, so that part was good!).

Sounds like a really boring day, right, and you’re wondering why I was even there. Well, I eventually found out.  After lunch they switched into turbo mode and we cranked out eighteen testimonials between 2 PM and 6 PM. A testimonial is when a person who has used a particular product looks directly into the camera and tells their story about why they love it.

These are real people, not actors or models, so the makeup look is barely there, really clean and natural. Occasionally you’ll have to tone down someone who over did their makeup thinking it would look good on camera.  I usually enjoy these because the stories are heartfelt, and I get to learn more about the product.

Sadly, today I was so busy whipping through person after person that I barely could see through all the powder flying. I could not do my usual pamper and relax routine with each of my clients, but instead assaulted them with a swift spritz and tissue blot, then attacked them with brushes and sponges flailing, and then minutes later kicked them out of the chair with seconds to spare before my next victim sat down to be tortured. As The Shirelles so aptly sang,  “Mama said there’ll be days like this. “There’ll be days like this,” my mama said.”

The highlight of my day came when they asked me if I was available to work with them tomorrow, because the company’s CEO was unavailable to do his shots today. So happily I am working tomorrow, and hopefully there will not be another eighteen testimonials!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NICOLE! XOXO

Jenny and Sean Got Married… their Florida reception

August 20th, 2010

Jenny, a pastry chef at a well known Philadelphia bakery, and her very handsome husband Sean, were married up in Philadelphia. After their honeymoon in the Bahamas the groom’s family threw them a reception for all of the Florida friends.

The blushing bride decided to wear her short strapless wedding dress (with red heels!),  so I did the makeup in a natural bridal style. Her new sister-in-law was there to keep her company, is such a sweetie and has the most beautiful skin.  “Bliss” lipgloss by The Blushing Bride Cosmetics looks amazing with her coloring!  So without further adieu…

Raw Talent Guitar Commercial

August 19th, 2010

This past Friday I had a ton of fun doing makeup on the set of Raw Talent Guitar. It’s not really a “Guitar Hero” type game because it uses a USB interface to read input from an actual guitar instead of a small plastic toy guitar.. The user plays along to pre-recorded tracks  and the software then evaluates the performance.

The concept of the shoot was to take a young slacker dude frustrated with his failed attempts to learn to play guitar, and then turn him into a rock star in concert. I also did the wardrobe shopping/styling for this, and we used the clothes and accessories to really bring about the change. Our main talent was a really good sport when I had to “geek” him up, glasses and all.  And what about the amazing lost in the ’70’s set Jan Infante created. She is a genius prop/set designer!

No rock concert would be complete without some smokin’  hot babes hanging out backstage waiting to party, and this one did not disappoint. Two lovely ladies were on board to hang out offstage and look great. Here are some of my photos, and you can see lots more on the company’s Facebook page  here.
